The rules

How the award works

Published guidelines, so every applicant and every donor knows the same thing.

What it is
A $1,000 award toward the startup costs of entering a skilled trade.
Who can apply
Anyone in the United States, age 17 or older, who has been accepted into or is enrolled in a registered apprenticeship, a pre-apprenticeship, or an accredited trade-school or community-college program in a skilled trade.
What this award applies toward
Tools, safety equipment, required testing or certification fees, and program or tuition costs. One award is $1,000 and may not cover the full expense. It is applied toward these costs.
Proof of enrollment
Every applicant uploads a document (acceptance letter, enrollment confirmation, apprenticeship registration, or union indenture) showing their name, the program, and the start date, and provides the program name and a contact. The foundation confirms enrollment before any award is paid.
How many and how much
For the first cycle, up to three $1,000 awards, as donations allow.
Timeline
Applications open January 1, 2027, close February 28, 2027, and recipients are notified by March 31, 2027.
How to apply
Through the short application form on this site. Along with your program details and proof of enrollment, you write one short statement in your own words: what is the main reason you are getting into the trades, who influenced your decision, and what it will mean to you when you reach journeyperson. Applications open January 1, 2027.
How recipients are chosen
Every applicant has already enrolled or registered in a program, so the choice comes down to your statement. Applications are reviewed and selected under these published guidelines, on the strength and honesty of that statement. No donor can direct who receives an award.
How funds are paid
Awards are paid directly to the recipient's school, union hall, or shop, which applies the funds to the recipient's costs. The foundation does not pay cash to individuals.
